A bibliography of previous studies of the problem of the relation of the cycles is to be found in Miss Lyle's book. c Eleanor G. Clark, "The York Plays and the Gospel of Nicodemus,". The Wakefield or Towneley Mystery Plays are a series of thirty-two mystery plays based on the Bible most likely performed around the Feast of Corpus Christi probably in the town of Wakefield, England during the late Middle Ages until 1576. It is one of only four surviving English mystery play cycles. Some scholars argue that the Wakefield cycle is not a cycle at all, but a mid-sixteenth.
Some of the York plays are almost identical with corresponding plays in the Wakefield cycle, and it has been suggested that there was an original now lost from which both cycles descended. It is more likely, however, that the York cycle was transferred bodily to Wakefield some time during the later 14th century and there established as a Corpus Christi cycle. The York Mystery Plays, more properly the York Corpus Christi Plays, are a Middle English cycle of 48 mystery plays or pageants covering sacred history from the creation to the Last Judgment. They were traditionally presented on the feast day of Corpus Christi and were performed in the city of York, from the mid-fourteenth century until their suppression in 1569. The plays are one of four virtually complete. OF IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT and the Life Cycle 1959. ln addition, he has examined the identity issue of historical fig-ures, such as Martin Luther 1962, Mahatma Gandhi 1969, and Thomas Jefferson. ln these psycho-historical studies he is concerned with the identity crisis of each of these men. Lyle, entitled " The Original Identity of the York and Towneley Cycles," has appeared. This accepted quite completely my theory that the two cycles and True-Coventry developed out of the same liturgical source, but advanced beyond me in marshalling evidence to prove that the separation in development which I suggested did. Two plays about Jacob are peculiar to the Wakefield cycle, which omits many narratives from the New Testament that are found in all the other surviving cycles. The cycle has been published, with notes and glossary, as The Towneley Plays, 2 vol. 1994, edited by Martin Stevens and A.C. Cawley.
A good read, if at times technical, and a good introduction to Erikson. This book provides an accessible overview of his theory of psychosocial development first proposed in Childhood and Society, without getting into much detail or illustration for the stages.Afterwards it explores in detail the stage of Ego Identity vs. Role Confusion, marked by Erikson's concept of the now common term. Erik H. Erikson - Identity Youth and Crisis 11968, W. W. Norton & Company 1. It is one of only four surviving English mystery play cycles. The unique manuscript, now housed at the Huntington Library, San Marino, California, originated in the mid-fifteenth century. The Towneley family who lent their name to the manuscript, sold it at auction in 1814, but it was probably part of their library at a much earlier date. The new Early English Text Society edition of The Towneley Plays will serve as a definitive edition for many years to come. It replaces the edition by George England and Alfred W. Pollard, published nearly one hundred years ago by the Early English Text Society. The Towneley Plays manuscript dates approximately to the year 1500. The plays it contains are often considered the most interesting.
