It was named for Governor John Evans, who was the second territoral governor of Colorado. The original name of the town was Stage. Evans was home to some interesting people. One person was Elbridge Gerry who led an exciting life as a trapper and trader before coming to live in Evans.

About 25 years later, a number of the Welch Tract people, removed to the Welch Neck in SC basically over a dispute of theology. In 1861 Edward Evans donated land on his farm to build a church for the Welsh people. This church was to become the root of several Welsh churches later built in the community. The late Edward Rees, who for 24 years was the Republican congressman from the Kansas fourth district, was the grandson of Edward Evans.
