Dec 09, 2010 · H. S. Richardson, founder of a publishing firm of Greenwich which still bears his name, brought out a book in 1834 entitled “Greenwich: its History, Antiquities, Improvements and Public Buildings,” in which he gives the following description: – “The entrance was then through a narrow aperture, but a flight of steps has since been made. The three plans are a floorplan of Greenwich Hospital, Greenwich Hospital School and the Royal Observatory. The inserted papers also relate to Greenwich. In 1834 Richardson published ''Greenwich: Its History, Antiquities, Improvements, and Public Buildings''. Centre right is the Queen's House with the walled roadway from Woolwich to London running though it. To its right, the old Tudor Place is being redeveloped. Although much of the original Place was cleared in the 1660s and 1670s, Henry VIII's tiltyard towers are still standing but are in the course of demolition. Greenwich Castle was a hunting lodge used during the reign of Henry VIII, located in Greenwich Park, in Greenwich, England. The Royal Observatory, Greenwich now stands on the site. Greenwich Castle was apparently a favourite place for Henry VIII to house his mistresses, as it was within easy travelling distance of Greenwich Palace at the foot of the hill.
Greenwich Hospital, in its present state, consists of four distinct piles of building, distinguished by the names of King Charles's; Queen Anne's; King William's, and Queen Mary's. King Charles's and Queen Anne's are those next the river: between them is the grand square 270 feet wide; and in front by the river-side a terrace 865 feet in length. Great changes were about to take place in Greenwich as a result of the Royal Hospital’s ‘Improvement Act’ of 1826. Just a few years later, in 1834, a contemporary historian, Henry Samuel Richardson, 1811-1906 noted, ‘Numerous improvements have been made in the Town during the last few years which have greatly altered its appearance.
