The first recounts Canada’s growth from Seventh Century European exploration to its participation in the 1930’s Westminster world. The second is his comparison of present day Canada to the time of his writing. BOURINOT, Sir JOHN GEORGE 1837–1902, writer on Canadian constitutional history, born at Sydney, Cape Breton, on 24 Oct. 1837, was eldest son in the family of five sons and two daughters of John Bourinot, a member of the Canadian senate, by his wife Mary Jane, daughter of Judge John Marshall, well known as a temperance advocate of Nova Scotia. John Bourinot was educated in Caen, France, and came to Nova Scotia as a young man. He carried on business as a ship-chandler in Sydney, supplying mainly French ships, and shortly after his arrival he was appointed French. Sir John George Bourinot was a native of Sydney, NS. Bourinot was a journalist and legislative reporter in Halifax before joining the parliamentary staff at Ottawa in 1868. From 1880 to 1902 he served as Clerk of the House and was a recognized authority on parliamentary procedure.
