A general indifference and deadness reigned throughout the Protestant Churches; and the goodly vine which had been planted in the seventeenth century suffered under a withering blight, and was to a lamentable extent shorn of its foliage and fruitfulness. His parents emigrated from County Antrim, in the north of Ireland, in the year 1742, and settled at Fagg's Manor, in Chester County, Pa. There he was born on the 11th of November, 1752. In his infancy he was dedicated to the Lord by his pious parents, and their earnest prayer was that God would spare his life and make him a minister of the gospel. Born 1835; son of J. R. White, Esq., of Whitehall, co. Antrim; educated at Sandhurst; entered the Army, 1853; served in Indian Mutiny; captain, 1863; Major, 1873; was in the Afghan War of 1878-80, and present at the occupation of Kabul, and in the expedition to Maidan, Sharpur; Military Secretary to Viceroy of India; Lieut.-Colonel, Gordon.
